Hi everyone, I’m Dr. Leslie Yedor from InSpero Medical in Edwards, Colorado.
While it might not be getting a lot of attention in the mainstream media, there are a number of scientifically based tools you can use to prepare your body to prevent or manage COVID-19.
The longer you can delay contracting it, the more information we will have to treat it effectively. So, although we would like to prevent it, we want to help you take action to delay the onset and reduce the severity and progression of COVID-19.
Our immune defense protocol evolves as new evidence comes to light, but we want to share with you our current recommendations to patients at InSpero Medical. As a disclaimer, this is not intended as medical advice and please consult your medical provider to make sure these are the right recommendations for you.
We are currently using a combination of supplements based on peer-reviewed literature, the institute for functional medicine’s guidelines, and scientifically backed traditional Chinese herbal formulas currently being used in China.
The first recommendation is 1,000mg of Vitamin C twice a day. Vitamin C has both immune modulating and anti-viral effects and is being used in hospitals in the United States and China to treat COVID-19. We prefer Liposomal Vitamin C by Quicksilver Scientific because of its enhanced bioavailability. But if you don’t have access to liposomal, any vitamin C will do.
Zinc as both lozengers and in capsule form are next on the list. Low to moderate doses of zinc daily have been shown to be effective against viral infections by preventing the virus from entering cells and preventing viral replication. Sucking on a zinc lozenge every day, especially before going out, will help protect the throat from viral exposure. Our preferred brands are Zinc lozenges by Davinci Labs and Zinc picolinate by Thorne Research. Zinc supplementation should be limited to a few months to help keep other nutrients in balance. Take 1 lozenge and a 30mg zinc capsule daily.
Both Vitamin C and Zinc are essential nutrients, meaning we need to get them through food because the body can’t make them. Most of us are likely deficient in both nutrients even on an optimal diet due to the depletion of vitamins and minerals in our soils.
In traditional Chinese medicine, the herbal formula Yu Ping Feng San has a long history and scientific evidence supporting its use for balancing the immune system and preventing viral infections. We like a version called Basecamp or Forti Fend by Griffo Botanicals.
One of the modern protocols being used in the hospitals in China for the prevention of COVID-19, adds a small amount of a traditional formula called Yin Qiao San which has anti-viral actions. For this we are using Febris by Griffo Botanicals.
Take 1tsp of Basecamp or Forti Fend with ¼ tsp of Febris twice a day.
These 4 supplements, vitamin C, Zinc, Basecamp or Forti Fend, and Febris make up the current immune defense protocol. If viral symptoms do occur, we then use Chinese herbal formulas aimed at addressing specific symptoms and the prevention protocol is no longer appropriate. Many of these supplements are in high demand and alternative brands may still be quite useful.
Additional supplements such as curcumin, resveratrol, and quercetin that have immune modulating effects may also be helpful in preventing cytokine storm and acute respiratory distress syndrome in those that do contract COVID-19.
You can also grab yourself a cup or more of green tea every day for the ECGC which is an antioxidant that may also help reduce viral replication and balance the immune system.
Last but not least your mental-emotional state also has a large effect on viral susceptibility.
All of the lifestyle tools that promote optimal health, like eating nutrient dense food, meditation, movement, and connection with loved ones will help boost morale and strengthen your immune system.
